About Us


		The Incredibly True Tale of the Men Behind the Shirts
		As you already know, t-shirts don't buy themselves. What you may not realize is that t-shirts don't make themselves either. And that's where these two rich and handsome fellows come in; they are the founders and the main creative force behind your new favorite t-shirt and gift shop, Channel Shirt. But who are these wonderful and devilishly attractive men? This is the place with the answers.

John rules you.

John
John Harris was born with a Wacom tablet in hand. Some say the universe spontaneously evolved to prepare itself for his talents. When it comes to creative arts, there is nothing at which John does not excel. His artistic genius is overshadowed only by his devastatingly good looks.

John has been a computer game designer, a free-lance artist, a radio station disc jockey, a minister, an officer and a gentleman. He now lives in Oklahoma with his wife, Cat, and a small but formidable army of domesticated animals.

Dave likes cake.

Dave
Dave Sylvester is a professional computer whisperer and business guru. He has far too many college degrees which are primarily used for wall decorations. Very expensive ones. However, his business and computer acumen is surpassed only by his devastatingly good looks.

Although Dave steadfastly maintains that the internet is a fad and will soon pass, he's not above using it to make some money; especially if he can do so making funny t-shirts, which are far more comfortable than suits and ties. He lives in Southern California.

John and Dave met in 6th grade, and out of sheer lack of other options, became good friends. Their respective desires to cause good-natured mischief and mayhem in public schools united them against a common foe, and thus their creative partnership was born. Between creative writing, drama, making and breaking computer games, and crafting impressively large tokens of affection to win the hearts of various women, their collaboration extended from school projects to 4-track rap songs to home-made movies.

Over two decades later, John and Dave continue to work together to create fun and intricate projects, mostly for their own amusement. They are, however, happy to share the fun with other interested parties. Channel Shirt is one of the many creative outlets by which they express themselves and hopefully inspire others to stand up and take a crack at creativity.

    Hi! Wow, you made it all the way down here without finding a vintage or funny t shirt you like, eh? You do realize you can click on any category of t shirts in the left hand navigation bar and see even more cool shirts, don't you? And you know you can search for any t-shirt design you want in the search bar at the top of the page, right? Good. I wouldn’t want you to think the promotional t-shirts on the first page are all the funny shirts we have. There are tons more funny t shirts all over this site. Lots of cool retro and vintage t shirts too.

    But, since you’ve come all this way and haven’t chosen your new favorite funny or vintage shirt yet (that I know of), I might as well entertain you. Perhaps with the history of how ChannelShirt.com came to be. So sit back, grab a delightful beverage, and listen...

    Long ago, Dave and John (have you seen the About Us page yet? That’s us!) were sitting around, dreaming of funny t-shirt designs they would love to see on shirts. But no one was making these funny shirts. Or making them properly anyway. Sure, in the past, just like most people, we'd learned to make a t shirt or two for ourselves and our friends, usually using a homemade screen printing kit or buying the crappy t shirt iron-ons. But, of course, these suck. And it's tough to start your own t shirt business with iron-ons. No, we knew that learning to make your own t shirts and starting a t-shirt business would probably require lots of start-up money for things like art supplies, printing equipment, inventory control, t shirt shop website development, marketing, etc. And money was something we didn’t have. But then we found CafePress.

    Cafepress allows you to upload your own t shirt design and put it on a shirt for free. Of course, it costs money to buy the t-shirt afterward, but buying one print-on-demand shirt at a time is a lot better than having to buy 100 shirts before a screen printing company will even bother with your order. So, we created our first Cafepress store. Then, because our first t-shirt ideas were about funny twists on the word "hippopotamus"-- which is inherently funny -- we called our t-shirt shop Shirtopotamus and launched it with our first three shirts, all featuring our funny hippo designs. In fact, you can still find our original hippo t shirts in the animal t-shirts section of Channel Shirt (along with lots of other cool wildlife t-shirts, including dog t-shirts, cat t-shirts, horse t-shirts, wolf t-shirts... heck, you name it, we got it!).

    With our first tshirt designs live and on the internet, we quickly realized that we would need to branch out if we wanted to sell shirts other than hippo t-shirts.

And we already had lots of other non-hippo t-shirt ideas in mind, so we re-branded ourselves as ChannelShirt and made Shirtopotamus just one of many “channels” or categories of cool t-shirts that we offered. The design of our original t-shirt shop played off of the “channel” theme, and is still active today at Cafepress.com/channelshirt.

    And that's when the floodgates began to open. With ChannelShirt live and actively featuring our first funny tees on Cafepress, we began creating all kinds of awesome new t-shirts. For instance, we were really into geek culture, so we started making emoticon t-shirts (we were a couple of nerd t-shirt designers after all).

Those smiley t-shirts were fun and relatively easy to create, and you can still find them (along with some very cool Japanese emoticon shirts) in our geek t-shirts section. Then, because we are both avid writers who regularly participate in NaNoWriMo and ScriptFrenzy, we made some t-shirts for writers, which you can still find in our writing t-shirts section (btw, if you know a writer, one of these funny writer t-shirts would make an awesome and unique gift!).

We then followed up with some funny Christmas t-shirt ideas, Valentine’s Day shirt ideas (each of which can be found in our holiday t-shirts section), and -- for our very favorite holiday -- Halloween t-shirt ideas.

The Halloween t-shirts are especially great, btw, because not only does Halloween lend itself to funny t-shirts, but some Halloween shirts can double as Halloween costumes.

    Due to popular demand from our friends, we then made a few t-shirt designs based on popular TV shows. Very quickly, some of our TV t-shirts became our fastest sellers, and we realized two things: (1) pop culture t-shirts are very popular, and (2) we needed to expand our TV t-shirt section dramatically.

And maybe start exploring some cool movie t-shirts and music t-shirts as well.

    About this time, we realized that, although Cafepress was a great way to start a t-shirt business, we would eventually need our own t-shirt website so we could control more of the process. Also, we'd started seeing many other funny shirts on the web which met our high standards of humor and design, and we realized it would be great to not only sell our own original t-shirt designs, but also to compile the best and funniest t-shirts on the web. All in one, easy-to-find place.

And, if we wanted to sell other people's cool t-shirts in addition to ours, we were definitely going to need a new site.

    So, to make a long story slightly longer, we made our own website, which you are now diligently reading. In fact, I’m actually quite surprised you got this far. Good for you. I hope you enjoyed the journey. We sure did. Making our own t-shirt site wasn’t super easy. It took some programming, and lots of learning on our part. But, what you see in front of you is our proud creation, and we are doubly proud of all the cool t-shirts, funny t-shirts, and vintage t-shirts we can now provide to you and the people you like enough to buy gifts for.

    As we develop the site, we expect to be adding lots of cool features, including tutorials on how to design your own t-shirts, how to make your own t-shirt store, and, just like we did, how to start a t-shirt business and become a t-shirt mogul. So, keep an eye on our t-shirt blog and in the news section for those upcoming goodies (because, just between you diligent readers and us, they're coming up very soon!).
